Breeding Philosophy
Â
Our Breeding Philosophy at von Nummer-Eins German Shepherds:
At Nummer Eins, breeding a German Shepherd Dog is not an exercise in producing puppies: It is a generational responsibility. The puppies that leave our home carry our name, our reputation, and our belief in what the breed was always meant to be: a courageous, athletic, noble companion with correct structure, clear temperament, and the capacity to work.
Our philosophy has been shaped over decades of experience, national-level accomplishments, and the privilege of stewarding a female line that consistently produces dogs capable of real-world work and family life:Â
The why behind each breeding choice that defines our program.
Where the Breed Stands Today and Why Philosophy Matters
Â
The modern German Shepherd Dog faces challenges that did not exist 50 years ago. Genetic diversity has narrowed. Structural exaggeration has become normalized. Working ability has become split from breed type. Temperament varies more widely than ever.
Â
For a breed designed to serve humanity: in homes, on farms, in law enforcement, in sport, this fragmentation is not acceptable.
Â
At Nummer Eins, we believe the best path forward is also the most traditional one:
Â
Start with healthy, sound, stable dogs.
Build from maternal strength.
Preserve moderate structure and working clarity.
Outcross strategically, not reactively.
Honor the breed standard in both form and function.
This is not marketing language. It is the practical blueprint behind every dog we produce.
A Strong and Consistent Female Foundation
While many kennels chase fashionable sires, our program begins, and is anchored, with exceptional females. The German Shepherd is a breed where the dam contributes profoundly to temperament, early development, and the subtle traits that define consistency.
Our female line has produced dogs who excel in:
International-level Performance
Active family Homes
IGP and Search & Rescue Work
Therapy and Service Dog Roles
Females like VA Vesta Nummer-Eins and VA Vesper Nummer-Eins and Motte Suentelstein that laid the foundation to their grand daughters and great grand daughters today like Tabasco v. Nummer Eins and Fida v. Nummer Eins exemplify what a modern German Shepherd should be: elegant yet strong, clear in nerve, moderate in structure, and predictable in their offspring. A Breeding Program without a strong female foundation is simply a collection of dogs. Ours is a legacy.
Outcrossing for Purpose, Not Trend
Â
We do not believe in breeding within tight circles simply to preserve names on a pedigree. Nor do we believe in random outcrossing for novelty. Instead, our outcross philosophy is intentional and data-informed.
The T-Litter (Ucon Patiala × Jade Nummer Eins): A Turning Point
The T-litter was a landmark moment for our program. Ucon brought his familial pigment and type, balanced drives & proven working ability.Â
Paired with Jade (daughter of Motte, one of our foundation females), the result was a litter that exceeded expectations in consistency, health, temperament, and clarity. This outcross broadened our genetic base while preserving everything we value.
Most importantly, it produced Tabasco, one of the most influential daughters in our kennel.
Bridging the Divide Between Working and Conformation Lines
The German Shepherd is one breed, not two competing factions. Yet for decades, working lines and conformation lines drifted apart, each developing their own strengths and weaknesses.
We chose to reject this divide.
Lupin dell’Altopiano: The Dog Who Could Walk Between Worlds
Lupin brought courage and working capability, moderate, correct structure, clear, stable temperament, an absence of exaggeration with excellent anatomical proportions.
His pairing with our female Nala v Nummer-Eins produced Fida, a young female who represents the next generation of Nummer Eins: moderate, capable, structurally correct, and resolute in character.
Through dogs like Lupin, Fida, Atlas etc. we are restoring what the German Shepherd should be: a dog who works and looks like the standard.
Health, Temperament & Longevity Drive Every Decision
We select sires not for their popularity, but for their ability to complement our females. Each pairing is evaluated for:
temperament compatibility
structural harmony
working capability
genetic diversity
long-term health impact
We avoid extremes, extreme angles, extreme drives, extreme sizes. The German Shepherd is a balanced breed, and balance is a marker of both beauty and longevity.
The Direction Forward
Our goal in the past 3 decades has not been rapid expansion: it is refinement.
We move forward with:
Â
carefully selected outcrosses that improve the breed without destabilizing our line
a commitment to preserving the moderate, athletic, intelligent Shepherd
a philosophy rooted in both tradition and modern genetic understanding
The future of the breed depends on decisions made today. Our decisions are made with the next 20 years in mind, not the next litter.
